I go through quite a lot of parchment paper, even though I reuse pieces until they turn brown. So, I decided to try a silicone baking mat. I looked at several brands on Amazon and read lots of reviews! I finally decided to get this three pack of baking mats from Velesco for $16.58. The reviews were almost universally positive and the mats can be used at baking temperatures up to 480 degrees Fahrenheit. You get three of these for about the same price as one Silpat and that sounded like a great deal! (Also, there were a lot of comments on the Silpat that said people were getting fakes and the mats were melting onto their baking pans.)
This is the info on the box:
I washed one of the baking mats as directed, then tried it out in a half-sheet pan. It fits perfectly!
I tried baking biscuits, cookies, and rolls to see how well the mat worked. I started with the biscuits and am really pleased with how nicely they baked on the mat. The bottoms browned well and were perfectly crunchy. I’ll definitely be using these mats for biscuits and scones from now on!
Next, I baked some oatmeal cookies. My first batch browned too much on the bottoms and were underdone in the centers.
I bake most cookies at 375 degrees Fahrenheit and had done the same with these. So, I tried another batch at 350 degrees and they were much better. However, the cookies were not as crispy on the bottoms and edges as they are when baked on parchment. If you like softer cookies, this might be ideal, but I’ll stick to using parchment for cookies.
Finally, I baked some honee sunflower rolls on the baking mat and they turned out perfectly. I will be baking all of my rolls and braided loaves on these mats now!
So, I got mixed results, but overall I really like these Velesco baking mats and will use them a lot. They are a great deal and I definitely recommend them!
Great review. Thanks for taking the time to do this!
Thank you! I’m so glad you like my post!
