My mom and I were so excited to find Oatly oatmilk at Whole Foods a couple of weeks ago! We had been looking for it for a long time so we bought both the plain and the chocolate to try! Here is what the cartons look like:
First, we tried both by themselves to see what they tasted like. We really like the plain one! It is a little less sweet than Silk Original Soymilk, and quite a bit creamier without being too thick. We would happily drink it anytime, with only the price being a drawback. These were $4.99 each, compared to $3.29 for Silk Soymilk. For plain milk to drink, I’m not willing to pay over 50% more for Oatly when I like the Silk almost as much.
The chocolate Oatly was not nearly as good as Silk chocolate soy, almond, or cashew milks. It’s not strong enough in chocolate flavor, and it has an odd aftertaste. (It’s very similar to the Bolthouse Farms chocolate, which I don’t like either.) We would not buy it again, even if it were lower in price than Silk.
Next, we tried Oatly and Silk Original Soymilk in tea. The Oatly was markedly creamier and we both preferred it over the Silk. We will definitely buy the plain Oatly again for use as a creamer!
Finally, we used my homemade hot cocoa mix and tested the Oatly and Silk in Cocoa. Again, the Oatly was a lot creamier, more frothy, and richer than the Silk. The Silk was still very good, but the Oatly was better!
So, we will not buy the chocolate Oatly again, but will definitely buy the plain Oatly whenever we are at Whole Foods. We probably won’t pay the extra for everyday use, but will buy Oatly to make cocoa and vegan eggnog for holidays and when we have non-vegan company we want to impress!
Awesome! Can’t wait to try it myself. Does it taste oaty, like oatmeal in liquid form? Did it have a grassy or bitter taste to it, like some oat flour I have tried? Lastly, can I use this 1:1 for soymilk in your cooking and baking recipes?
Thanks for sharing these product reviews with us! Love it!
Thanks! The Oatly milk is very neutral in flavor, and doesn’t taste like oatmeal. It is the closest to whole dairy milk that we have tried. Neither my mom nor I thought it was at all grassy or bitter, and my mom is really sensitive to bitter tastes. For comparison, we both really dislike hemp milk because of its grassiness and we both think almond milk is a little bitter. Yes, you can use Oatly instead of soymilk in my baking recipes and in most of my cooking recipes. I would choose it over my usual favorite Silk Soymilk in pudding, hot cocoa and vegan eggnog. I also think it will work well in mashed potatoes and creamy gravies but I haven’t tried them with Oatly yet. The Oatly is not as sweet as the Silk Original Soymilk, but it is sweeter than the Silk unsweetened version that I use in those recipes. So, I think the creaminess of the Oatly will be great, but there is a possibility that it will be a bit too sweet in recipes where I call for unsweetened milk. Hope this helps!
